2/19/13: GenghisCon 2013!

Hey guys!

So GenghisCon 2013 has come and gone and, I gotta say, I can't hardly wait for the next event! I had a ton of fun running around, seeing new armies, new games, grabbing some swag, and chatting up some really great people the whole weekend! 

My biggest event, though, was the painting competition. First painting event, I knew I had a good shot in the competition, and its nice to see my work pay off. I actually talked to one of the judges following the event, and when she told me she pouted when my piece didn't come in first in the Large Model group, I knew I was doing good. I now know what it takes to win some more awards though, so expect some more one-off display based pieces to roll across the desk!

One of the other guys in our group walked away with 3rd Place in the Single Figure piece, so Durango Diceworks showed up and represented in the painting competiton! 

Sunday, though, was the gaming time to shine. Not being a Fantasy player, I just relaxed, watched some games, played messenger, and tried to find some deals in the vendor's hall. Some interesting events transpired though! First off, there was a Fire Alarm about 5 minutes into the second game. Kinda fun to watch a bazillion nerds wander out into the sunlight!

For game two, after everyone won their first games, the entire group got matched up against each other. Talking to the TOs, they changed the match-ups, pitting Mr. RTGamer against a rather nasty Teclis High Elf army! Boo hiss!

Best part though was our youngest player, Andrew, walked away with the Youngbloods award for the tournament! Way to go Andrew! Look out next year guys, there's going to be some stiff competition coming from this young man!

Alrighty! The best part about this weekend was that my Hobby Mojo is back in full swing! We're looking at Tacticon later this year, thinking I can get my Alpha Legion list tweaked, painted, and ready to roll for then, so expect some more Alpha Legion models and some lists to pass by on the blog!

2/7/13: Upcoming Projects and Commissions

Hey guys!
Posting from the phone today, will go in tonight and clean this post up, but I figured I'd show off what projects are coming up from Smells Like Wargaming! Neil's Grey Knight Henchmen are very close to being done, and should have them finished by next week. But we've been busy here, so let's work down the line.
1: Thunderwolf Space Wolves: Should be an extremely fun project, we're looking at:
-Canis Wolfborn
-15 Thunderwolf Cavalry
-10 Grey Hunters
-1 Drop Pod
The insane number of Thunderwolves will make this project fun, and will be the first collaboration project between myself and RTGamer. He'll be rocking out the wolves, while Ill get the marines finished.



2: Jason's Imperial Guard: Lots and Lots of Forge World! I love painting new projects and models, and this is chock full of them!
-1 Primaris Psyker
-20 veteran Guardsmen with FW Hazardous Environment Upgrades
-2 Griffon Mortars
-2 Vendettas
The tanks are going to be the most fun, I haven't done IG models since I did my own Guard, and I've learned a lot since. Expect a lot of increased techniques and methods on the tanks. The Vendettas are getting those gorgeous FW decals on the wings, so I'm excited to get to play with those kits again.



 

3: Chaos Marines Heldrake: I thought this model was bigger! The wings add a lot onto the size, but its really a gorgeous model. The client is looking for a Death Guard/ Nurgle theme with a swampy base, so with a little work, its going to be a gorgeous model overall.

4: Ogres Ogres Ogres!: One of my bosses is also one of our best clients, and both myself and RTGamer have been doing a lot of projects for him and his son. Most of the ogres and high elves that have come over the blog have been for him. He's been getting his pieces ready for Genghis Con, so expect more Ogres to come through in the next week!


Alrighty! More class today, then work. Perhaps ill get some more assembly and painting done tonight? We'll see!

1/16/2013 - The New Guy!

Hello folks,

RTGamer here. Thought I'd give you a little background. I've been in the hobby for almost 15 years and love painting miniatures. Over my time I have played mostly fantasy and only recently started looking out to the round based games.

I enjoy long walks on the beach...  Ermmm ignore that last bit. I am Scottish and I came over to Durango, CO in 2010. In 2013 I am please to be joining with Granesh and providing this service!

In 2013 I will be attending Ghengiscon (in Denver) and in true style I need to build and paint an army for it. So you will see them on here until February. After that it will be mostly elves (seems like I have painted nothing but High or Dark Elves for the past couple of months.) and any commissions I take on from here. You will also see some Warmachine, Wyrd and maybe just maybe some 40K models from me as the year goes on. Anyway I have rambled enough. To the pictures!

Here are some of my more recent commissions and also pieces of the two armies I completed in less than a month for a personal tournament in 2011 and 2010. I will let the pictures do the talking (sorry some of them are a little rough around the edges as the pictures were taken a while ago before I learned to take decent pictures)

1/6/13: Finished: Ogre Kingdoms Maneater and Sabretusks, Part Un

Hey guys!

So I've been busy the last week with New Years, work, and yes, a little painting. I wanted to get these guys done as quickly as possible, so I sat down and rolled through the majority of the little Ogre Kingdoms group I'd picked up from a friend.

Gotta say, again, loving the Sabretusks. The sculpts are dead on for the feline form, and while the faces are a little ugly, I have a lot of fun painting them.

Craziest model I've done in a while, the Ogre Maneaters are a lot of fun to work on. I did a shield on the back of one of the Cannons in yellow and green, so I opted for those colors again for the Maneater. And its Stirland, I couldn't remember the yellow and green Empire group. Hooray for posterity's sake!

I had some more pictures of him, but it looks like my phone didn't want to upload them to Blogger! Go technology, go! Just for fun too, here's a shot of the Ogre Kingdom's stuff I've gotten done so far for my client! Working on monsters is a nice break from Space Marines and human models!

I also spent the day hanging out at the shop, watching RTGamer and another buddy of mine play some Fantasy (Go Vampires go!), playing some Magic, and hanging out with some friends of mine. 

Alrighty! Tomorrow is the last time I have a first class of the semester, so here's wishing me luck to one final semester! Should be a good one, I've got Graphic Design history, a Senior Seminar class, and a History class on Peace in Africa. Might need one more class, so we'll see. Should have some more work done this week, stay tuned!

12/31/12: Ogre Kingdoms Sabretusks and Maneater WIP

Hey look, I did post!

Just some WIP shots of what I worked on yesterday to get back into the swing of things. Discovered my pot of Abaddon Black somehow turned into rubber, so I'll be picking up a new pot when I'm at work on Wednesday. 

Rather happy with the Sabretusks, I guess they make good charge deniers in Fantasy, but they might as well look sexy when getting hit by a bazillion Chaos Warriors!

Gotta rock the tats too! Only problem is I look at them and all I can think is...

KITTY!

Also started work on an Ogre Maneater, opting for a Green and Yellow Empire theme; the name of the region they're from is escaping me right now. Gotta say, really missing Tallarn Flesh right now, it worked so much nicer than Cadian Fleshtone! Oh well, I can make it work!

12/30/12: Back in the Saddle Again!

Hey guys!

So obviously, if I'm posting, that means I'm back in the studio! I got back to Durango on Friday night, worked Saturday, and spent today running errands and getting groceries. But that means Smells Like Wargaming is back on track!

I hope you all had an awesome Holiday season! I spent as much time as I could with my family hanging out, watching the Broncos whoop the Browns, and enjoying myself. Even played some board games! Who doesn't love some The Simpsons Life?

For those of you who haven't figured it out yet, I'm a huge Denver Broncos fan. Glad to see the team go 13-3, best record we've had since the Elway era! And #1 in the AFC West! Go Broncos go! I popped down to the shop today to pick up some pieces for a client (More on that below), and ended up watching the Broncos/Chiefs game while my bosses played some Warhammer Fantasy. Ogres ended up pulling out the win, and there were some crazy shenanigans going all up in there!

So, what's up on the schedule? Well, below, I've got a shot of my current projects; an Ogre Maneater, some Sabretusks, and Neil's GK Characters. Maybe if I finish Coteaz and the Librarian, I'll be more motivated to get the rest done! Also have the second Bastion and all the guns built for Sam's Strongpoint, hoping to get that sucker finished by Thursday or Saturday!

May have another post up tomorrow, but if I don't, have a great New Years, don't get too crazy, and I'll see you all on the front end of 2013! Excelsior!

11/5/12: Finished: Festus the Leechlord, Ogres’ Ironblaster, and Spurs that Jingle, Jangle, Jingle…wait..what?

Hey guys!
So, as promised, I have another blogpost for the day! Sorry for the lack of posts, like I said, I’ve been pretty busy the last week or so.
First up is Festus the Leechlord. I’d been debating on picking this model when he came up, and my boss said he’d commission me to do him, as he was planning on running him in a squad of 60 Khorne Chaos Marauders! Ouch! About 5 hours into him, lots of fun! I actually picked up another to use as a Dark Apostle, so expect him soon!

Also finished was the second Ogre Kingdoms Ironblaster for the other owner of the shop I work at. Really happy with the pair of them, lemme see if I can find a picture of the other one…

Huh, don’t seem to have a picture of the other Ironblaster. Here’s a Stonehorn instead, from the same army!

Also played around a little bit with my Ork Stompa. Wasn’t sure if I was going to paint him and sell him or just sell him, but I’m thinking I’ll do a little weathering practice on him and then let him go to a home that’ll get to use him!

Lastly, for everyone who’d followed the Facebook page, you got to see me work on my Halloween Costume. If not, well you shan’t miss out!
I decided to go as the Courier from one of my favorite games, Fallout: New Vegas! Ratty 50’s prospector clothes and a Pip-Boy, not too difficult, right?

The Pip-Boy was actually pretty easy to do and, though it didn’t survive the night, it played its role: being really fucking heavy! Anyone guess what it is?

That’s right, it’s an alarm clock. Add some bottlecaps, spray it black and weather the hell outta it, and you’re set! It was also glued to an old elbow pad which I removed the hard plastic cap from. That sucker was really heavy and ended up getting lost in the great Durango Zombie March.
Anyways, here’s the costume all finished, minus the ski goggles:

And me with my amazing girlfriend ex-girlfriend, who went as a rave fairy!

Phew! Alrighty, I’ve got a ton of projects to work on! Abaddon, an Imperial Strongpoint, Grey Knights, Warmachine pieces, more Malifaux…I’m in full swing!

11/5/12: Painting: I Ain't Dead Yet!

Hey guys!

Quick post today while I'm waiting for my afternoon classes to start!

I've been pretty busy over the last week or so; it doesn't mean I haven't been painting, but I just haven't had time to post! So, here's a little sneak peek of tonight's post!

WIP of Festus I'm doing as a commission for my boss! He's looking at running him with 60 Khorne Marauders, which is a scary, scary unit!

Halloween was a blast; I went as a Fallout New Vegas Wastelander, Pip-Boy and all!

Ironblaster #2 was completed! Just gotta get the arms for the Gnoblar on the first Ironblaster I did and we should be good!

Alrighty, hopefully that tides you all over for a bit! Should have the post up tonight with even more pictures!
