7/20/14: Finished: Eldar Wraithknight Trio

Howdy folks!

I didn't get a chance to share my new Nurgle projects this week, but fret not! I'll get a post up on them next week at some point, I promise! In return, though, I blew through the latest commission to cross the painting desk and, boy, is this one a doozy! I've never had the misfortune to play against a Wraithknight (Toughness 8 and 6 Wounds?! Really?!), but I can't imagine playing against THREE! My Alpha Legion army wouldn't have a good answer for it, my old Guard would have had some issues, and my newest Nurgle force would still have their work cut out for them! Ahem...but I digress....enough chitchat, pictures!

The dirty trio in all their glory! The client has a deck-of-cards theme to his army; lots of harlequins with off-white, red, and black motifs. I was able to work this into each Knight by subtly theming each one to a suite; Diamond, Spade, and Hearts.

As you can see, every option is magnetized. Wanna go crazy and run three Ghostglaive/Scattershield Wraithknights?! Go for it! Suncannons all around? Of course! All the magnets are consistent across all three models, so no need to keep track of each set either!

A shot of the bases before the Wraithknights were attached. My client's main opponent is a Children of Torment army (Slaanesh Black Legion), so he wanted them scattered across his bases.

'Diamonds' in all his badass glory!

There's a gentle reflection effect done on his faceplate, and his pose, like all of them, evoke a look of urgency and attack.

Love how his interaction with the base turned out!

'Hearts' braces for another shot!

You can see the heart on the faceguard to designate him from the other two.

Those poor Terminators took some clean headshots, probably from the hiding group of Pathfinders. They're always a pain to find...

More freehanding for the Black Legion symbols!

And 'Spades', his left leg was cut and reposed to give him the appearance of leaping back from a missed enemy shot or attack.

The checkering, I should point out, was done with a sharp blade and painter's tape. A general diamond pattern was cut out, and each individual piece was attached to the primed plate (black or red). Once affixed, they were sprayed with the airbrush the correct color, waited upon to dry, then carefully removed! Voila!

Little extra freehanding on his shoulderplate too!

Aww, that poor Aspiring Champion almost made it to Daemonhood....and no, he doesn't have two Chainfists, those Chaos Bayonets are crazy long...

Man, I had a lot of fun with this project! The client and I have been in talks about doing some Titans in the future so, fingers crossed, a Revenant or Phantom will cross the workbench!

Alrighty! Next up are a whole mess of Imperial Knights, including one for Carl over at The Independent Characters which will be really cool, as well as more alternate Necrons, Nurgle Daemons, more zombies than you can shake a stick at, and an add-on to the Legio Metalica/House Raven commission I completed back in May. Looking forward to painting a Knight Lancer!

Also, Smells Like Wargaming will be moving house again the final week of July, so expect a minor delay in updates. I'm finally making my big move up to Denver with my girlfriend, which I'm incredibly excited for. I'm also going to have my own studio (!!!!) and be closer to more stores and conventions, so if anyone's in the Denver area, feel free to hit me up and maybe we can get a game in!

Things are heating up!

3/3/14: Finished: Craftworld Lugganath Wraithknight

Howdy folks!

Sorry for the lack of updates last week! I worked most of the week at the FLGS, so most of my time was taken up there! Did a little work on some personal pieces, so expect a post, probably tomorrow, on all that!

Anywho, this post is about those damn dirty space elves! I was approached, after my interview on The Independent Characters podcast, to fully magnetize and paint an Eldar Wraithknight! Having never had the privilege to paint one of these bad boys, I had to take it! I think he came out rather well, methinks!

The beast in all its glory! I posed him as if he'd just crushed the poor Crimson Fists' bike and was scouting for another target.

And the back! I opted to do all the gems on the black areas, and selectively do the ones on the orange to keep from overpowering those areas. You can see the Shimmershield well in this picture, I did the same marbling effect on the runes that I did on the hilt of the sword and on the gem on the back.

Speaking of the gem on the back!

Dual Wraithcannons! All weapons are magnetized, from the Wraithcannons to the Scatterlasers on its shoulders!

And with the Suncannon!

And all the pieces together!

While the orange was a pain to work with, as was the Montana Gold primer we used for the project, I still had a ton of fun getting this model all painted up! Would love to see a full Lugganath army painted up...maybe after my Alpha Legion...and my Grey Knights...and my Space Marines....well someday!

Next up is a Flying Circus of Tyranid Monstrous Creatures! Note for my followers: I will be out of town this Friday til Sunday, then from the 13th to the 22nd, as I'll be sunning it up in Hawaii! A break from this Colorado weather will be super nice! Should have the Nids done by then though, so stay tuned!

4/7/12: Finished: Orange Crush Chaos Marines and Biel-Tan Eldar…FINALLY!!

Hey guys!

So I’m finally done with this commission! I’ve never had a commission give me so much trouble to get through, but I sat down yesterday and got it all finished. As an artist, I’m not totally happy with how everything turned out, but its done and the client’s happy, which is all that matters!

WHEW! So glad these are done! I sat down yesterday too and got some personal pieces either finished or started.

Sorry for the crappy lighting, I’m still getting the apartment figured out. Anyways, that’s Bloodletter #3 for my Chaos Marines, and Rhino #2 for the Alpha Legion. The bloodletter was half done anyways, so it was just a matter of doing his sword.

The Rhino, on the other hand, was a test to see how the teal color turned out without Midnight Blue (my base color for Alpha Legion). A 1:1 mix of Necron Abyss and Chaos Bla….oh wait, Kantor Blue and Abaddon Black, worked perfectly. A little Scorpion Green mixed in, and it worked spendidly!

Alrighty, down to the shop to learn a little Game of Thrones for my new job (I work at the FLGS now!!), I have some lists I want to run by you guys…we’ll do that tomorrow!

2/9/12: Reworking the Blog; Finished: FW Eldar Shadow Spectres

Hey guys!

So just a quick post today, I’ve had a couple of requests to get an RSS feed up for the blog, amongst other things, so I’m playing around with that, seeing what I can do. The RSS Feed for Smells Like Wargaming is HERE, so all you followers with Smart Phones or just like to have your blogs in one place, now you can add me!

You can also see the layout of the blog has changed a little bit. Just something to freshen the SLW experience, as soon as I get more time, I’ll be fixing the size of the logo, as well as finding more buttons and things. Stay tuned, and if you find any bugs or weird things on the site, please, let me know.

Alrighty, the fun stuff! Sat down this weekend and finished up Mike’s Shadow Spectres. BEAUTIFUL models, but if I have to paint another gem…what do you mean I have 2 more Wave Serpents….

I wanted to keep FW’s white armor, but opted for greens for Biel-Tan, rather than Myamera’s blues. I know the bases in the last shot don’t match the War Walker, the matter has been resolved!
Got a 2 Wave Serpents and a Fire Prism to do, and the Eldar’ll be done!

I also found a little time to get a project ready for myself, just something to break up Chaos and Imperial Fists.

DSCF2103

My Magpie friend ditched his new Necrons after his second game, so I decided that this’ll be a good group to paint up, play a little, then sell off. We’re looking at just under 1k points:
  • 2 Necron Overlords/Lords
  • 2 Command/Annihilation Barges
  • Finecast Cryptek
  • 24 Warriors
  • 8 Scarabs (who needs 4 to a base?)
  • 5 Immortals
Should be a quick paint, and will be good to break up monotony a little bit. I need a good personal project, I’ve been feeling a little burnt out lately.

More Eldar shots tomorrow, and hopefully some Necrons!

2/2/12: Finished: Mike’s Thousand Sons and Eldar War Walkers; Bloodletters and Chaos Bikers

Hey guys,

So I’ve been rocking through projects over the last week while dancing around school projects, assignments, and homework. I think I’ve done pretty good though!

First up is the Thousand Sons squad for Mike’s big Chaos detachment I’m working on.

DSCF2055

DSCF2056

The client’s army is blue and orange (Orange Crush!), ala the orange on the models.

DSCF2060

Really happy with how these turned out, though the vine work is alright.

DSCF2063

Still have a Vyper, 3 Wave Serpent-style tanks, and the new FW models to do!

Somehow, I managed to try a couple of my own pieces too. Rather happy with the Bloodletter, although the sword is just ok in my book.

DSCF2057

Matches the Berzerkers too!

DSCF2059

Finally, I got the biker bases all finished too. Got to play them in a game on Saturday (beat Deathstar Blood Angels), so Granesh is 2-0 in my Local Ladder League! Hoping to get the Alpha Legion out on the table again this Saturday! Oh right, pictures! Of course…

DSCF2064

I’ve been going back in and retouching up areas I wasn’t happy with, so the Champion got the Power Sword redo like his on foot counterpart, and the one Plasmagunner is magnetized, I forgot the other one was a full bit…

DSCF2066

The Alpha Legion summon in the chosen of Khorne to sneak attack their foes.

DSCF2067

More Orange Crush Chaos Marines on the way, along with Eldar. After them, The Sons of Dorn!
