Tutorial: Painting Chevrons

Hey everyone,

So I was working on the base for my Arvus, and decided that this would be a good start to adding some useful tutorials to the site! So without further ado, here's how to paint chevrons.

Step 1: Using a fine-tipped brush, paint equal diagonal lines across the area you want the chevrons in using Chaos Black. I then blocked in every other chunk with Chaos Black, then the other blocks using Iyanden Darksun.

Step 2: Mix a batch of 1:1 Iyanden Darksun to Sunburst Yellow onto the Yellow sections. Leave the layer of Iyanden Darksun in the edges.

Step 3: Paint the yellow with pure Sunburst Yellow. Don't glob the paint on, as the yellow WILL become streaky and splotchy. Use several thin layers.

Step 4: Mix a 1:1 batch of Sunburst Yellow and Dheneb Stone and line the edges of the Yellow with it. You can also paint the edges of the black with Adeptus Battlegrey.

Step 5: Paint pure Skull White over the last highlights. You now have some great looking chevrons!

I hope this tutorial helps you guys out, this is just the first of many tutorials I hope to throw up on the site! For some extra bonus, here's what the Chevrons (And the base as a whole) all finished up:

  1. Quick and simple. My kind of tutorial!
I'd not heard of highlighting like this. I may have to give it a go.

Next tutorial paint chipping by any chance?

  2. Why thank you Kevin, most of my highlighting on bold, bright colours take this approach!
As for the next tutorial, you'll just have to wait and see, but expect Tutorial Thursdays to be a very common thing!

  3. Great stuff. A useful hint if I may add...you can buy Zig Micro Pens (or something similar) at most hobby stores (Micheals, Hobby Lobby) and use them to draw the initial lines. They are much simpler to use than a brush for the diagonal lines.
