Tyranids: Part Two; and My Carnifex Came in…hey wait…

Hey everyone,

So as the title shows, I got both a new, redone list drawn up, as well as my Tyranid Carnifex kit, today. I’ll share the list in a little bit. I was hoping to get my Tervigon started today, but alas…

The back end of the Carnifex was missing! I’ve had stuff missing before, so I just dropped an email to Games-Workshop and they’ll probably just replace the kit, which would be really nice. So hopefully, I’ll have the stuff in time to start on a Tuesday Tutorial section about how I really built my Tervigon.

Anyways, the list. I’m keeping the 3 Tervigon, its just how I want to build the list. According to Abusepuppy over from 3++ is the New Black, I constructed a defensive Tyranid list. Definitely wasn’t my intention, so with a little help from my buddy, Brother Yotakka, I got the Second Part of my Tyranid list written up.

HQ

  • Tervigon with Scything Talons, Acid Blood, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, and Catalyst.
  • Tyranid Prime with Lash Whip and Bonesword, Scything Talons, and Adrenal Glands.

ELITES

  • Venomthrope
  • Venomthrope

TROOPS

  • Tervigon with Scything Talons, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, and Onslaught.
  • Tervigon with Scything Talons, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, and Onslaught.
  • Termagant Brood (X20)
  • Termagant Brood (X20)

FAST ATTACK

  • Gargoyle Brood (X20)
  • Gargoyle Brood (X20)

HEAVY SUPPORT

  • Mawloc with Adrenal Glands.
  • Mawloc with Adrenal Glands.
  • Carnifex Brood (X2) with Heavy Venom Cannons.

TOTAL: 2000 Points

Once again, this list holds the Endless Swarm Ideal. The Termagants stay near the Tervigon, who confer 4+ Poison, Furious Charge, and Counter Attack. The Venomthrope sit in the middle of the Gant hordes and keep cover. The Gargoyles are quick, get-in-your-face units. The Mawloc pop up under Transports and non AV 14 vehicles, then hopefully get a chance to stop Land Raiders, etc. Finally, the Tyranid Prime attaches to the Carnifex Brood, giving them both Synapse, makes anything that assaults them I1, and gives an opportunity for Instant Death. The Carnifex proceed up the board, shooting at vehicles and assaulting anything too close.

I’m much happier with this list, I actually have a clear idea in my head of how this list should be run. But as usual, I’d love some critique and criticism on the entire thing.

Finally, The Independent Characters have gotten me in contact with the winner of the Bastion Painting Contest. I can’t divulge anything yet, but he wants a Battleship Grey scheme, complimented by a Desert Tan color. Expect pictures next week!

  1. mawlocs suck, and i don't mean in a little way in a big way
    - no fleet
    - 3 attacks
    - 3 WS
    - no ST so no rerolls
    - Init is only 4
    - if models/vehicles in cover then cover save granted from terror from the deep

There just not worth the points.

  2. Hi Mathhammer,
You definitely make some good points there. I really like the Terror from the Deep rule, thats weird that they'd get cover saves from it...

Anyways, this is an in-progress list, and since I don't have any models yet, I can still tweak and play with things (college budgets are awesome!). I'll try some Trygon in the list next and see what I can do with them.

Would you recommend any specific upgrades? I really like the Adrenal Glands...

  3. Well you get the cover saves from terror from the deep since it's resolved as a shooting attack with it's origin the center of the template. When in doubt anything with an AP value is a shooting attack.

There is a couple ways to go with the Tyranid list. (none of them top tier but get some luck and you can get there). Your list is a modifier birther (3 tervigons) with a MC mash component ( the trygons + carnifexs) My issue is the list is splintered. The tervigons want to stay home (tervigons + gaunts + venomthropes) While the (prime/carnifexs/mawlocs/gargoyles) want to advance as quick as possible. In this list you only have one synapse going forward (prime). So my first upgrade would be a trygon prime for more support. The second thing I would look at is the HVC on the carnifexs stop them from running to try to shoot targets. I think I would make the fexs base ( at best) and find a way to get a hive guard and adrenal glands on the trygon. Adrenal glands on the tervigons are a waste since the gaunts rarely will charge, so we reduce that down to just the HQ one. I dropped the ST on the tervigons because the last palce you want them is CC. Also onslaught to move the fexs forward isn't worth it, rather have three fnp engines.

  5. I really like that list. You definitely have a lot of good points, and I know my desired army style is strange, but your list just makes sense. Just got it written up in AB, I don't get any gaming in during the school year except when I go home, so I'll definitely test this list out first!
